Using Essential Oils

There are many ways to enjoy the benefits of essential oils.  All oils should be 100% therapeutic grade from organically raised plants.  They should be sold and stored in dark glass bottles in a cool dark area.  You can make up massage oils, creams and water sprays to keep in plastic bottles for a short time but for optimal storage use glass.  Oils have different life spans, citrus oils should be good for up to a year, most oils if stored correctly will last for at least two.  Some oils, such as sandalwood get better with time.

When you are using essential oils, make sure you do not touch the top of the bottle and contaminate it with body oils.  You want to drip the oil into your hand, a diffuser, cream or massage oil, or onto a cotton ball or Kleenex.

There are a number of ways to use the benefits of pure essential oils - you can use one or many methods.

bulletDiffusing - this is a great way to get rid of unwanted odors and create a calming environment.  Cold air diffusing helps reduce bacteria, germs, mold and fungus in the air.  It may promote relaxation, relieve tension, create alertness and clear the mind.
bulletAdding to a bath or shower - add 2-3 drops of oils to a tablespoon of unscented liquid soap and swirl into the bath water.  You can also use the soap in a shower or drip 1-2 drops of the oil onto the shower floor.
bulletDirectly applying oils to the skin can promote healing benefits.  Lavender on burns and cuts is healing.  Using oils on the bottom of the feet or the palms of the hands (known as Vita Flex Technique) is a very effective way to send healing oils throughout the body.
bulletWear as a perfume, especially the oils of geranium, rose, and ylang ylang.
bulletMassage oils can be created by adding 5-6 drops of an essential oil to a tablespoon of massage oil.
bulletCleaning - a couple of drops of essential oil in your washing machine, dishwater, or in homemade cleaning supplies will enhance the power of those products.  Favorites include lemon and peppermint for kitchen cleaning, lavender for laundry, and tea tree or eucalyptus for disinfecting.
bulletAs a dietary aid or in cooking: many oils you buy in the stores are labeled for external use only and should never be taken internally.  One of the joys of the Young Living brand of oils is the purity of those oils that are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) by the FDA.  A single drop of lemon or peppermint will flavor a cup of tea and in the case of peppermint, calm an upset stomach.
