The History and Benefits of Essential Oils Essential
oils are the volatile oils produced by plants - these are the oils that give
flowers, spices, herbs, trees and fruits their distinctive aromas. These
oils are found in all parts of the plant and are normally collected through a
distillation process. Distillation includes heating and pressurizing the
plant in water, capturing the steam produced, and then separating the essential
oil droplets from the condensed steam. Ancient
people used plant essential oils to perfume their bodies, purify their
homes, and create atmospheres of relaxation or excitement. They also knew
that the benefits of these oils went beyond the pleasing aromas and would use
them to treat both psychological and physical ills. Over
time, much of the history of these plants has been lost to scientific advancement
and the growth of synthetic drugs. However, during the past 100 years, a
revolution has begun to take place and the re-emergence of Essential Oils as
healing oils is becoming widespread. In
the early 1900's, a French chemist named Gattefosse was working in his
laboratory when he suffered a severe burn to his hand. Wanting to immediately
cool his burn, he plunged his hand into what he thought was a bowl of water.
Instead of water however, he had plunged his hand into lavender essential oil.
Within a few days, he found that his burns were rapidly healing and with minimal
scarring. Since the time of Gattefosse, humans have studied and learned much about the uses and benefits of Essential Oils. Worldwide, researchers are studying the effects of these oils on germs and viruses as well as on the brain wave patterns of people. Today many people are discovering that the aromas of essential oils go beyond just smelling good. The concentrated volatile oils retain the healing properties of the herbs and flowers they were distilled from and can be used to treat both physical and psychological ills.
